WT Intensive German -- text book needed
Does anyone here have (or know somebody who has) a copy of "Neue Horizonte," 6th edition, by Dollenmayer, which I could borrow for winter term (or buy from you at a low cost)? I'm taking WT intensive German, and really don't have the money right now to spend $150 on a book that I won't be using for more than a month and a half. I promise to take extremely good care of your book (I'd even give you a security deposit, if you like).

so I'm sure this has a really obvious answer
but I'm having a pretty awful day (obviously) and I can't really concentrate on anything, so...I lost my key and my ID (they were attached to a keychain). Who am I supposed to contact about getting a temporary ID for the day? And how will I find out if someone finds my key and ID?

My name is Johanna, and I'll be attending Oberlin this fall as a third year transfer student. (Sorry, I know this group is for 2011-ers, but this post is relevant to you). I'm wondering whether you or anyone you know will be driving from near Newton, MA to Oberlin in time for the new student orientation (which begins August 28), and might have room the car for me (and my luggage--or just for me, I suppose, as my stuff can be shipped more cheaply than I can. :) ). Of course, if I join you, I'll help pay for gassoline and, if you want, be a great car dj. :o)
Thanks for your generosity! I look forward to meeting you.

SORRY TO INTRUDE
Hi. Current Mood: hungry
Unfortunately I am not able to say that I am going to Oberlin in the class of 2011. Not because I didn't get accepted, but because I haven't applied yet! I am a senior in high school still. I will be applying in November, as Early Decision. I'm so exited that I can't help but feel a little worried as to whether I am good or not. SO I decided to ask some of you lucky chaps/new Obies if you wouldn't mind quelling my anxiety about applying successfully (seeing as that is what all of you did!)? I am currently worried about whether or not my SAT scores are high enough to get accepted. I know it's not only about the scores, but still... I have one chance left to take them if I want, so I am trying to find out if it's worth stressing over or not. A lot of the older Obies can't help me because the test has changed since they were accepted, and supposedly the competition for getting accepted into Oberlin (and college in general) keeps getting tougher and tougher--including SAT scores. Since you guys took the new SAT, may I ask what your scores were, and whether or not you took subject tests?
My scores are: Math:660 Reading:700 Writing:700 Essay:9
What about you? I'd like to see how it compares, or whether I should take the test again.
Congrats again, I'm happy for all of you. School's almost here!!!
Where is everyone living??

Pre-Oberlin Location: poland, ohio
Some interesting details about the town/city in which you live: we have one of the biggest high school marching bands in ohio. there are 800-some kids in our high school, and 300+ of them are in band.
Music: my favorite band is death cab for cutie. i like most types of music.
Books: i really like chuck klosterman and j.d. salinger. one of my favorite books is extremely loud and incredibly close. i like poetry a lot.
What book(s) are you reading right now? Good, bad, boring? right now i'm reading harry potter and the prisoner of azkaban, and it is great. it's my favorite harry potter book.
Movies: almost famous, harriet the spy, high school musical, the life aquatic with steve zissou, lost in translation, legally blonde, rushmore.
So what the hell do you do with all that "spare time"?: i try to read as much as i can. i watch flavor of love and all of the spinoff shows. i work out a lot.
Where is the most exciting place you've traveled? disney world :)
Fill in the blank: "Ohmygoodness, I'm so afraid that my college roomate will _____!" fall off of the top bunk :(

Pre-Oberlin Location: Cheshire, CT
Some interesting details about the town/city in which you live: We're the bedding plant capital of Connecticut. How exciting. More exciting to me: The Cheshire High School Marching Ram Band is the USSBA Group 5 champions. And I was the drum major. Win.
Music: Mostly jazz, classical, and rock; but I can potentially be interested in any genre. If I like it, I like it.
Books: The Hitch Hiker's Guide to the Galaxy books are my most favorite ever. I used to be a huge sci-fi/fantasy geek, but now I mostly read random teen angst/girly/manga books. Yeah, junk food. Random stuff I like (not complete at all): The Princess Bride, The Man Who Mistook His Wife For a Hat, The Great Gatsby, The Catcher in the Rye, and the authors Terry Pratchett, Orson Scott Card, J.R.R. Tolkien, Anne McCaffrey, Margaret Weis, Tracy Hickman, and Arthur C. Clarke.
What book(s) are you reading right now? Good, bad, boring? The Lucifer Effect, which is by Philip Zimbardo, the guy that did the Stanford Prison Experiments. It's about why and how good people go bad. Veeery interesting.
Movies: Again, not complete: The Princess Bride, Star Wars, The Breakfast Club, The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, The Rocky Horror Picture Show, The Life Aquatic With Steve Zissou, Borat, Ghost World, 2001: A Space Odyssey, Spirited Away, Grease, Aladdin, Knocked Up, Spiderman 3 (only for the pie scene, if you know what I mean)
So what the hell do you do with all that "spare time"?: HAHAHAHAHA. Well, this is a good time to mention I'm a classical saxophone major in the Con. Besides music-ing myself, I enjoy DCI, crafts, writing, doodling, being a Grey's Anatomy fangirl, playing Wii, being random, dancing wildly around my house, etc.
Where is the most exciting place you've traveled? Australia
Fill in the blank: "Ohmygoodness, I'm so afraid that my college roomate will _be a total drug addict, sexile me every other night, and be a noisy, nosy kleptomaniac_!"
Anything else you'd like to add: Say hi, either here or on Facebook. I'd love to have a few safety friends before I get to Oberlin.
Feel free to throw in a picture at the end:
Sorry. I just went to a Drum Corp International show. It's on the mind. Current Mood: bubbly

Movies: Harry Potter, My Best Friend's Wedding, Happy Feet, Memoirs of a Geisha
So what the hell do you do with all that "spare time"?: lol absolutely nothing worthwhile
Where is the most exciting place you've traveled? I haven't travelled a lot at all, I guess the only exciting place I've been is to the Bahamas
Fill in the blank: "Ohmygoodness, I'm so afraid that my college roomate will _____!" : be a crazy sex-obsessed, druggie.

Amanda VivianPre-Oberlin Location:
Stamford, CTSome interesting details about the town/city in which you live.
I don't really know anything about my town because I went to private school from grades K-3 and 9-12, which means that I never spend a lot of time in my town or with people from my town. I know I really like the downtown library and the Stamford Museum and Nature Center but otherwise I have no idea what Stamford is all about. Except that Turn of River Middle School broke my heart.Music:
Rilo Kiley, Sleater-Kinney, Eisley, the Dresden Dolls, Neutral Milk Hotel, Margot & the Nuclear So and So's, Giant Drag, the Vibration. And some stuff I listen to with my dad.Books:
I'm not good at listing my favorite books, but here are the books I've intensely loved since November 2005: Some of the Parts
by T Cooper, White Apples
by Jonathan Carroll, Sexy
by Joyce Carol Oates, Rose of No Man's Land
by Michelle Tea, The Turn of the Screw
by Henry James, Oranges Are Not the Only Fruit
by Jeanette Winterson, Send in the Idiots
by Kamran Nazeer, Hamlet
by William Shakespeare, The Basic Eight
by Daniel Handler, and The Metamorphosis
by Franz Kafka. What book(s) are you reading right now? Good, bad, boring?
I'm reading On Writing
by Stephen King and it's really good (and helpful). I'm also trying to read Lipshitz Six
by T Cooper because I liked Some of the Parts
so much but I'm having trouble getting into it.Movies: The Princess Bride
, The 40-Year-Old Virgin
, Monty Python's The Meaning of Life
, Pirates of the Carribean
, Bonjour Monsieur Shlomi
, probably some other stuff but in general I don't like movies. So what the hell do you do with all that "spare time"?:
I waste a lot of time but I'm trying not to. When I'm not wasting time I write books, stories, and songs, record the songs, go on walks, read, write letters, and talk to people I like.Where is the most exciting place you've traveled?
ENGLAND. I mean I guess it's not super exciting but when I was there I loved it so much it didn't seem real. I was enchanted by the money and the buildings and the cold. It felt like a fairy tale. I can't explain why.Fill in the blank: "Ohmygoodness, I'm so afraid that my college roomate will _____!"
Oh damn, I don't know. I'd like to be friends with my roommate. It would be depressing if we didn't like each other and barely spoke to each other. It makes me happy if the person who wrote this survey actually says "oh my goodness" because I do too. Feel free to throw in a picture at the end
This is what I look like when I'm not making a facial expression
but I usually am.

sayville, new york
Some interesting details about the town/city in which you live:
have you ever watched gilmore girls? THAT IS THIS TOWN. we have parades for every holiday, with little children wearing costumes, from a winter-time christmas present to a beachy sandal suit. (embarrassing, i just got back from marching in the memorial day parade with my trombone haha). other than that, there is a pretty cool chocolate shop that i work at. yay chocolate.
currently listening to some stereolab. i also "dig" sufjan (like every other oberlin student, apparently haha), the kinks, menomena, clinic, OLD DUSTY ACCORDION ALBUMS, et cetera, et cetera.
big kurt vonnegut fan, wrote my research paper on him. i also like joseph conrad, torkam sarydarian, anonymous french poets...
What book(s) are you reading right now? Good, bad, boring?:
i'm reading the heart of the matter by graham greene. at first it was sooo boring! but half way through it, the main character's wife goes on a trip, enabling him to fall into a lusty affair, so that's pretty entertaining...
monty python, little miss sunshine, balloonland (watch it on youtube!), eternal sunshine, le notti di cabiria, ferris beuler, and much more.
So what the hell do you do with all that "spare time"?:
i write a lot of music, so i spend my spare time recording, mixing and all that jazz. i also love just going for walks; woo trees. to be frank, however, i don't have enough spare time :/ thank god high school is almost over!
Where is the most exciting place you've traveled?
well, i went to hawaii once. it was pretty cool...i saw an iguana...woo. haha. i used to travel a lot when i was younger, so i've seen most of the u.s. i'm excited and ready to see the rest of the world.
Fill in the blank: "Ohmygoodness, I'm so afraid that my college roomate will _____!"
eat me! no, just kidding. well, like your average newby college student, i hope my college roomate is very friendly, but not too clingy.
Anything else you'd like to add:
ha, if you're wondering what that object in my mouth is (in my default picture), it is not a bong, it is not a gold-plated penis, it is a kazoo!!
alright, well i've wasted a pretty good amount of time on here haha. in any case, i'm excited to meet all of you; oberlin is going to be great! Current Mood: chipper
|Saturday, May 26th, 2007|
so of course i didn't think to check lj for oberlin sites until i got that huge packet of forms to fill out, which forced me to go online to do oberlin registration things.
anyway hello there. here i am.
Home Location: Rye, NY
About Where I Live:
Rye sucks. plain and simple. aside from its convenient suburbial location, which lies about 40 minutes outside of NYC by train and 30 or so by car (with no traffic that is), it is a horrible city. essentially it is full of white, affluent, christian or jewish families. now i have nothing against being white and affluent and etc, however if it means that it creates a city lacking in diversity and severely lacking in any sort of liberal thought or open-mindedness. then yes its a problem. i live in a bubble, where preppy children are sheltered from the real world.
i can't wait to get the fuck out.

change of leadership...
hey anybody and everybody. My name's Marie, I'm currently a freshman at oberlin. Back when I was first accepted, there was a community like this, so I figured I'd go ahead and create it because the early decision notifications should be coming out promptly. Congratulations, and I hope you decide to come here
hey, I'm sarah, marie decided she had no time, so I guess I'm the new fearless leader of this community. Same deal as her though, current freshman, etc. She deleted her last post, so here's the comment that was left on it (ps congrats mac!)
"HELLO MARIE, MY NAME IS MAC SUNDIN FROM FAIRMONT, WEST VIRGINIA AND I JUST GOT MY ENVELOPE FROM OBERLIN....I GOT IN EARLY DECISION!!! I'M JUMPING UP AND DOWN. OBERLIN WAS MY FIRST CHOICE AND I'M SO EXCITED. I'LL POST MORE LATER.
on a final note, fill out the survey that's in the intro section of this community!
